Different Types of Collars for Dogs

21 Sep 2008

Are you planning to train your dog? One of the most important tools in training them is the collar. However, if you go into a pet store you are and ask for a collar, you would probably be asked for the type of collar that you are looking for. There are various collars to choose from and each has their own unique style and function. Below are the different types of collars, their descriptions, and uses: • Head Collar The head collar acts and looks like a muzzle but is actually used by you in leading your dog. This way, you can avoid having your dog lead you, instead of you leading them. • Choke Collars a. Limited Choke Collar For safety purposes, this type of collar is rarely being used nowadays; but should it be used, its main function is to keep your dog from running astray. This is because the collar is designed to tighten around the neck of the dog the moment it starts pulling away, thereby causing distress to the dog. b. Martingale Collar This is a more basic form of a choke collar, as it tightens across the dog’s neck to prevent them from getting away. Thus, it is generally used by owners in restraining their dog. Unlike the limited choke collar though, the dog will feel no pain. • Electronic Collars This type of collar comes with a remote controller that owners use as a means of controlling their dog. You must keep in mind though that this should not be used as a means of punishment for every wrongdoing. Instead, it should be used as a way to minimize negative behavior. • Pronged Collars Typically made of stainless steel, pronged collars are quite daunting to look at, as its designed has small prongs in the inner side of the collar. Some even think that it is unkind to use such a collar. However, despite how it is formed, its function is to let the dog know that the lead is being pulled too hard by them. It is very useful in training large disruptive dogs. • No Bark Collar As the name itself implies, this kind of collar is a way of controlling your dog’s barking. If the dog barks uncontrollably, depending on the design, the collar will either spray a minimal amount of citrus scent or emit a loud sound. Now that you know the different kinds of collars and their uses, shopping for one should be a breeze. But if you still are confused, you can ask advice from the sales person and let him or her show you how to use it. Make sure to read the manual properly as well to avoid incidents.
